WHEN IN ADDITION TO PAPER it is necessary to RESTORE THE MECHANISM

Notes about the restoration project

This restoration work involved a Chinese umbrella from the early 1900, belonging to a private collection.

With this type of objects the intervention also needs to focus on the mechanics, on the movement itself. Being an object made of paper, the continuous manipulation, opening and closing had created folds, tears and substantial damage. The most difficult thing was being able to make up for the gaps without being able to work in a flat position without adding a compensation weight.

Another damage was the breaking of two of the wooden slats needed by the artifact to fold and unfold.

After the repair of the gaps and the restoration of the wooden slats, I proceeded with the color retouching and consolidation to complete the restoration intervention.
